Position Purpose:
The Trainee Train Assistant will assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of various types of trains and locomotives (including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger trains).
The main goal is to ensure that customer freight and cargo reach their destinations safely, on time, and in good condition.
Position Outputs:
Duty Sign-On and Preparation:
Sign on duty at the designated workplace.
Determine the locomotive to prepare and obtain necessary equipment.
Check and supplement prescribed equipment and clean the working area.
Assist with the startup of locomotives and brake tests.
Locomotive and Communication Preparation:
Prepare locomotives as required.
Obtain and check functionality of communication equipment (radios, handsets).
Pre-Trip Preparation:
Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Attach/detach vehicles as per works order, including other procedural checks.
Shunting Activities:
Execute shunting as per directives while ensuring safe working procedures.
Update vehicle lists and manage placement of trucks in sidings.
Enroute Assistance to Train Driver:
Assist the Train Driver in ensuring the safe transit of trains.
Communicate and observe signal positions, reset trip outs, and deal with incidents.
Administration and Reporting:
Provide timely feedback to the Train Driver regarding any deviations or incidents.
Complete the Train journal and submit it to the Section Manager after each shift.
Qualifications and Experience:
Educational Requirements:
Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Other Requirements:
Undergo periodic medical evaluations and risk assessments every 12 months.
Physically fit for the role, capable of carrying heavy objects.
Minimum height of 1.6m; psychomotor ability assessed through the Vienna Testing System.
Functional Training:
Successfully complete theoretical and practical training for certification as a Train Assistant.
Competencies Required:
Knowledge of:
Communication systems, depot layout, locomotive classes, train working rules, health and safety regulations, and general TFR policies.
Skills in:
Locomotive coupling/uncoupling, observation, time management, communication, and problem-solving.
Attributes:
Stress handling, self-management, safety consciousness, and punctuality.
