Learnerships

The Shukela Training Centre provides Learnership programs for Junior Farm Managers and farm workers. These programs can be funded by AgriSETA, making them cost-free for employers. Employers participating in the Learnership program can also take advantage of significant tax benefits.



What is a learnership?

A learnership is a work-based approach to learning and gaining qualifications, combining structured work experience (practical) with structured institutional learning (theory). As per the Skills Development Act, a learnership must:

  • Include a structured learning component

  • Include practical work experience

  • Lead to a qualification

  • Be related to an occupation

Requirements

Importance of Learnerships

  • The learner engages in the working environment (practical).

  • The learner interacts with clients and gains an understanding of workplace dynamics.

  • Assessments are conducted at various stages based on the learner's competence (learner-centered).

  • The qualification is nationally recognized and benchmarked against international standards.

  • The learner can progress from NQF level 1 (equivalent to grade 10) to NQF level 4 (one-year certificate after grade 12)

    NB: The practical on-the-job training will take place on the employer's farm.


What is the duration of a Learnership?

The Learnership training program spans one year, with a few weeks of contact training at STC and the remainder on the farm.



STC currently offers the following Learnerships: Plant Production NQF level 4 (known as the Farm Manager Course)

  • 12-month program

  • Consists of 70% practical & 30% theory

  • Practical training on the farm, theory at STC

  • Theory includes 3 sessions of 3 weeks each       

  • Practical training occurs between theoretical sessions

  • The learner must compile a POE with the help of a Mentor/Supervisor

  • Program includes 35 Unit Standards

  • Learner should have experience in Plant production, preferably Sugarcane

  • Learner should have completed Grade 12


Plant Production NQF level 1 (known as the Elementary Farm worker Course)

  • 12-month program

  • Consists of 70% practical & 30% theory

  • Practical training on the farm, theory at STC

  • Theory includes 3 sessions, each lasting 2 weeks

  • Practical training occurs between theoretical sessions

  • Learner must compile a POE with the help of a Mentor/Supervisor

  • Program includes 35 Unit Standards

  • Learner should have basic knowledge of Plant production

  • Learner should have completed Grade 10



Other learnerships

STC can offer NQF levels 2 and 3 upon request from the farmer.

 

Funding

  • STC is accredited by AgriSETA as a skills development provider, allowing farmers to apply for funding through AgriSETA.

  • Applications are open from 01 September to 31 October each year.

  • Farmers can apply for both learnerships and/or skills programs.
