Key Responsibilities
Assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient handling of various types of trains and locomotives, ensuring the timely delivery of freight and cargo.
Perform locomotive preparation, including cleaning, checking equipment, and assisting with startup and brake tests.
Handle communication equipment (radios, handsets) and check functionality.
Conduct pre-trip locomotive and train safety checks, including brake tests.
Perform shunting activities and assist with train operations enroute, ensuring safe train movement.
Ensure adherence to safety standards and provide timely feedback regarding incidents.
Complete administrative duties, including signing off train journals at the end of shifts.
Eligibility & Requirements
Education Requirements: Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Physical Requirements: Minimum height of 1.6m, psychomotor ability, and the ability to carry heavy objects.
Other Requirements: Be willing to undergo periodic medical surveillance, safety behavioral risk assessments, and mental/physical fitness assessments.
Competencies
Knowledge: Communication systems, depot layout, locomotive classes, shunting procedures, train working rules, and safety protocols.
Skills: Train handling, locomotive coupling and uncoupling, time management, communication, observation, and problem-solving.
Attributes: Stress handling, self-management, safety conscious, punctual, and results-driven.
