What Is a Learnership?
A learnership is a practical training program that combines work experience with classroom learning. It leads to an NQF-registered qualification in fields like farm management, plant production, and more.
Learnerships are managed by SETAs (Sector Education and Training Authorities) and help learners gain skills that are recognized nationally and internationally. Apply Shukela Training Centre Learnerships

Young people who have completed Grade 10 or Grade 12

How Long Is a Learnership?
Most programs last 12 months and include:
Practical training on farms or at the training center
Classroom sessions at Shukela Training Centre (STC)
Our Learnership Programs
1. Plant Production NQF Level 4 (Farm Manager Course)
Duration: 12 months
70% practical on farm, 30% classroom at STC
Focus on sugarcane and plant production
35 unit standards, requires Grade 12
2. Plant Production NQF Level 1 (Elementary Farm Worker Course)
Duration: 12 months
Practical on farm, classroom at STC
Focus on basic plant production skills
35 unit standards, requires Grade 10
3. Other Levels
STC can also offer NQF Level 2 and 3 courses upon request.
Funding and Application
Funded by AgriSETA, making learnerships free for farmers and employers
Applications open from September 1 to October 31 each year
Farmers and employers can apply for funding through AgriSETA or contact Sanele Mbili and Petro McAuliffe at STC
Farmers can also benefit from tax incentives via SARS.

About Shukela Training Centre
Our main campus is at 30 Sugar Mill Way, Mount Edgecombe. The main campus hosts all engineering and theory learnerships. Practical farm training takes place on farms or at our satellite campus in Mtunzini, which includes residences for trainees.
