Position Overview
We are seeking two Field Assistants for seabird research on Marion Island. This role requires a passion for environmental science and the ability to work independently in remote, harsh conditions. Successful candidates will conduct biological research and monitoring activities to support seabird conservation efforts.
Requirements
A National Diploma/Degree in Natural Science or an equivalent relevant qualification.
Knowledge of environmental legislation and public service procedures.
Experience in field surveys, research administration, data collection and management, bird identification and handling, report writing, and meticulous record-keeping.
Strong self-motivation, determination, and physical fitness to endure harsh environmental conditions.
Ability to work collaboratively within a small team and adhere to health, safety, and environmental requirements.
Duties
Conduct biological research and fieldwork as devised by project managers.
Maintain accurate records and computer databases.
Report regularly to the project manager on progress and any challenges encountered.
Handle seabird adults and chicks with empathy.
Make day-to-day decisions regarding work priorities and protocols.
Important Note:
The successful applicants will commit to residing on Marion Island for one full year (April 2025 to May 2026) without the option to return before the end of the expedition. Candidates must be prepared for physically and mentally challenging tasks in extreme weather conditions.
