Position Purpose
Assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient handling of all types of trains and locomotives (airbrake, vacuum, high speed, heavy haul, and passengers). Ensure that freight/cargo reaches its destination in good condition and on time, in order to meet customer needs.
Position Outputs
Daily Operations:
Sign on duty at the designated workplace and receive tasks for the shift.
Prepare locomotives by checking and placing necessary equipment.
Clean the working area and assist with locomotive startup and brake tests.
Communication Equipment:
Prepare and check the functionality of communication devices (radios, handsets, walkie-talkies).
Pre-Trip Preparation:
Ensure locomotives and the entire train meet roadworthiness and safety standards before departure.
Perform necessary tasks such as attaching/detaching vehicles and conducting brake tests with the train driver.
Shunting Activities:
Execute shunting tasks as per work orders to ensure safe working procedures.
Assistance to Train Driver:
Assist en route to ensure safe movement of the train to its destination.
Provide accurate feedback regarding incidents and deviations during the journey.
Safety Compliance:
Follow safety standards and company instructions to maintain motivation and competency.
Administrative Duties:
Complete the train journal and submit it to the Section Manager after every shift.
Qualifications and Experience
Educational Requirements:
Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Other Requirements:
Willingness to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments.
Must be at least 1.6m tall and able to carry heavy objects.
Functional Training:
Must successfully complete all required theoretical and practical training to be certified as a Train Assistant.
